women between the ages of 18-65 and currently suffering from anorexia
nervosa are needed. This study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires, lab work and medication management. The total time

CLINICAL TRIAL FOR BULIMIA
Contact: Phyllis Roloff at the Wilkins Eating Disorders Center
203-531-1909.
Free screening and treatment. You must be a woman, age 18 or over.
After a pre-screening to see if you meet minimum guidelines, there will
be 5 to 10 visits over the next 4 months and then 2 follow-up visits
after that. This NIH funded study is being conducted in Greenwich,
Connecticut. The purpose is to test the effectiveness of Prozac and
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the treatment of bulimia in a primary
care setting. Researchers are attempting to determine if the primary
care doctor can help bulimia sufferers or if they are better served in
a specialized treatment facility.

treatments for adolescents with bulimia nervosa.
To participate you must be between the ages of 12-19 and suffer from
bulimia nervosa. The study requires that the study participants and
their parents be interviewed, fill out questionnaires and then be
assigned to one of two outpatient psychological treatments. Treatment
will consist of about 20 outpatient visits schedules over a 6-month

ANOREXIA NERVOSA DIARY STUDY
University of Chicago Eating Disorders Program
Seeking women ages 18 and older who have symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa.
This study is being conducted at The University of Chicago by The
University of Chicago Eating Disorders Program. Other sites included in
the study are the Eating Disorders Clinic at the University of
Minnesota and the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute in Fargo, North
Dakota. This study provides researchers with information about Anorexia
Nervosa – there is no treatment involved. Participants will
be asked to complete a series of interviews and questionnaires, a blood
draw, and a brief physical exam. After completing this portion of the
study participants will be asked to carry a PalmPilotTM with them
continuously for 2 weeks. During this time the PalmPilotTM will
randomly beep participants 6 times/day to answer a series of questions
on the PalmPilotTM (2-3 minutes). Participants will also be asked to
record certain behaviors on the palm pilot as they occur throughout the
day. In addition, participants will be called three times over the
2-week period to report their daily food intake. Eligible participants
may earn up to $250 for two weeks of participation. If interested in
this study contact Sarah Fischer, at 773-702- 9928 or Peter Doyle at

nervosa to take part in a family therapy study. Participants will be
randomly assigned to one of two types of family therapy and either a
placebo or medication group. Family therapy will be given for 36 weeks
and medication for a full year. Then, patients will be followed for
12-months after the end of family treatment. Hence, each family will
participate for approximately 1.75-years, with a total participation
time of some 50-hours. In a sub-study, blood will be drawn from those
volunteering for genetic analysis; this is optional. If you are
interested in finding out more about this study and live in the
Baltimore metro area, please contact 410.427.3854.

Treats all forms of eating disorders; children, adolescents and adults.
No cost research treatment available*
Overview: The Eating Disorders Clinic is part of the New York State
Psychiatric Institute, located at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
We are a nationally recognized treatment/research program. The purpose
of the clinic is to study Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge
Eating Disorder in an effort to find more effective treatments for
each. Since ours is a research program, we offer free treatment to
eligible women who suffer from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and
to men and women who suffer from binge eating disorder. We have both
inpatient and outpatient facilities, staffed by psychiatrists,
psychologists, social workers, nurses, recreational and occupational
therapists, and research personnel, all with the training and
experience in the treatment of eating disorders. Our funding is from
federal and state grants, as well as private contributions.
A brief screening is conducted at the time of the initial phone inquiry
to obtain background and general information from the patient.
Following the phone screen, a personal interview is scheduled for
further evaluation. Eligibility criteria vary from study to study.
FREE TREATMENT FOR TEENS
The Mount Sinai Eating and Weight Disorders Program is offering free
treatment as part of a federally funded study (Principal Investigator:
Katharine Loeb, PhD) for children and adolescents with emerging
anorexia nervosa. If your child is 10-17 years old, is medically
stable, and is developing signs and symptoms of an eating disorder,
s/he may be eligible to participate. The study is approved by the Mount
Sinai School of Medicine Institutional Board (Protocol 04-0978,
approved through 8/31/07). For more information, contact Rebecca Greif
at 212-659-8724.
TREATMENT STUDY
An NIMH-Funded study on Bulimia Nervosa is being conducted at the
Cornell Medical Center - Westchester Division. The purpose of the study
is to compare to sequential arms of treatment for efficacy and cost
effectiveness. In one arm of treatment the participant begins with a
guided self-help manual and if she has not ceased bingeing and purging
at the end of this program she is then offered medication. If she does
not respond to medication she will then receive the state of the art
cognitive behavioral therapy. In the other arm of treatment the
participant begins with the state of the art cognitive behavioral
therapy. If she does not respond she is then offered fluoxetine. In
both treatment programs the participant is followed for 1 year. The
treatment is free and the therapy is conducted by experienced eating
disorder therapists. For those who may be interested in learning more
about the study or who want to participate in the study and live in or
near the metropolitan New York area please contact Dr. Katherine Halmi,
M.D., at 914-997-5875 or directly contact research study coordinator:
